Outer Veto – Making Sure All Cosmic Ray Muons are Identified

  • The detectors are not deep enough underground to suppress cosmic ray muons reaching the detectors.
  • To ensure proper identification of all muons and prevent any possible mislabeling as anti0neutrino detections,  another system for cosmic ray detection has been added. An outer veto layer is added to the new detector. This secondary veto is a top sheet of scintillating material rather than a cylinder.
  • This along with an outer steel shielding common to both layers serves as the first line of defense against background interference.
