Gamma Catcher – Making Sure All Photons are Collected

  • The next layer is called the gamma catcher (γ-catcher), which contains a scintillator oil without the gadolinium infusion.
  • If capture occurs near the wall of the target, the  γ-catcher will ensure that all the photons (gammas) are collected by the detector for the successful identification of neutrino interaction.
  • Both the target and the γ-catcher are made from acrylic plastics which allow low energy photons to pass through while external x-ray and gamma ray photons are blocked from disrupting the experiment.
