Buffer Layer – Helps Filter Neutrinos From Other Particles

  • The buffer vessel is a stainless steel layer which supports the photomultiplier tube (PMT) light detectors.
  • It is filled with a non-scintillating oil which will not produce light when particles pass through it. This oil helps in reducing the noise (background)  rate; since neutrinos will likely pass right through this layer, the buffer oil will specifically prevent other particles from entering the target region.
