Spent Fuel
- Due to the uranium fuel cycle, the uranium-235 must be replenished periodically, and spent uranium must be disposed of. At the Chooz site, the spent fuel is kept in a building near the reactors.
- Since the spent fuel still produces radiation, the interference from this fuel has steadily increased since the start of the operation because the number of stored fuel rods has increased.
- This variable background is taken into account, and again, the near detector taking data will act as a good calibration which will largely mitigate this source of error.
