National Academies - Research Associateship Program

NASA's 21st Annual Planetary Science Summer School

Synopsis:

This program seeks people who have completed their graduate work and beyond in science and engineering fields, and who have a keen interest in a career in planetary exploration. Preference is given to post-docs, recent PhD's and current doctoral students; applications from masters-level students or faculty members will be considered on a space-available basis. Applicants must be living within the U.S. at the time of the application. Preference will be given to U.S. Citizens and U.S. Legal Permanent Residents ("green card" holders).

Organization of American States (OAS) - China Scholarships

Synopsis:

The purpose of the Scholarship and Training Programs of the Organization of American States (OAS) is to help the Member States in their efforts to achieve their objectives of integral development while supporting the development of their human resources in priority areas of the Organization. With this objective, the Government of China, through the Ministry of Education of China (MOE), in cooperation with the OAS, Department of Human Development, is offering support to citizens of OAS member states by providing partial scholarships to pursue undergraduate and graduate studies in China in any field of study available to international students starting in September 2009. The China Scholarship Council (CSC) is responsible for the enrollment of international students and carries out the routine management of Chinese Government Scholarship Programs.

National Physical Science Consortium - Dissertation Support Program

Synopsis:

NSF Astronomy and Astrophysics Postdoctoral Fellowships provide an opportunity for highly qualified, recent doctoral scientists to carry out an integrated program of independent research and education. Fellows may engage in observational, instrumental, theoretical, laboratory or archival data research in any area of astronomy or astrophysics, in combination with a coherent educational plan for the duration of the fellowship. The program supports researchers for a period of up to three years with fellowships that may be taken to eligible host institution(s) of their choice. The program is intended to recognize early-career investigators of significant potential and to provide them with experience in research and education that will establish them in positions of distinction and leadership in the community. APS - Minority Scholarship

Synopsis:

The goal of this minority scholarship is to increase the number of under-represented minorities obtaining degrees in physics. It provides funding and mentoring to minority physics students to enhance their education and help them prepare for success in various careers.

Through its program of Diversity Fellowships, the Ford Foundation seeks to increase the diversity of the nation's college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students. This year the program will award approximately 20 postdoctoral fellowships. The postdoctoral fellowships provide one year of support for individuals engaged in postdoctoral study after the attainment of the Ph.D. or Sc.D. degree.

AERA Minority Fellowship Program in Education Research

Synopsis:

This program is open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. Fellows will be required to provide proof of advancement to candidacy at the beginning of the grant period. At the time of application submission, the dissertation advisor will attest to the proposal constituting research for the doctoral degree. Applicants must work full-time on their dissertations and course requirements. This program is targeted for members of racial and ethnic groups historically underrepresented in higher education (e.g., African Americans, Alaskan Natives, American Indians, Asian Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, and Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islanders).

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship

Synopsis:

As a means of increasing the number of U.S. citizens and nationals trained in science and engineering disciplines of military importance, the Department of Defense (DoD) plans to award approximately 200 new three-year graduate fellowships in April 2009, subject to the availability of funds. The DoD will offer these fellowships to individuals who have demonstrated ability and special aptitude for advanced training in science and engineering. As part of its mandate for "the increase and diffusion of knowledge," including the diverse ideas, skills, and cultures of our nation, the Smithsonian Institution pursues policies of equal opportunity and cultural diversity. Smithsonian fellowships and internships are awarded on the basis of these policies. Graduate Fellowships allow students to conduct research for ten-week periods in association with Smithsonian research staff members. American Institute of Physics - Congressional Science Fellowships

Synopsis:

The American Institute of Physics annually sponsors one scientist to spend a year providing scientific and technical advice to Congress. The American Physical Society also runs its own APS Congressional Science Fellowship program, with the same purpose. Both programs are operated under the auspices of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, which sponsors its own Fellows, as well.

Josephine De Kármán Fellowship Trust

Synopsis:

DeKarman fellowships are open to students in any discipline, including international students, who are currently enrolled in a university or college located within the United States. Only candidates for the PhD who will defend their dissertations by June 2010 and undergraduates entering their senior year (will receive bachelors degree in June 2010) are eligible for consideration. Postdoctoral and masters degree students are not eligible for consideration.

American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Foundation

Synopsis:

The AIAA Foundation funds a number of scholarships to both undergraduate- and graduate-level students. This furthers a key part of its mission: supporting the success of future aerospace professionals. The AIAA Foundation's undergraduate scholarship program offers 30 scholarships of $2000 - $2500 to college sophomores, juniors, and seniors each year. All recipients can apply to renew their scholarship annually until they graduate. And through the annual graduate scholarship program, the AIAA Foundation presents ten graduate awards worth $5000 each and four graduate awards of $10,000 each.

Collegiate Inventors Competition

Synopsis:

The Collegiate Inventors Competition is a national competition that recognizes college and university students across the country whose innovations, discoveries, and research are deemed the year's most outstanding. The competition rewards the working relationship between students and their advisors who collaborate on innovations which are potentially patentable. Full-time students are eligible to participate.

Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO)

Synopsis:

Summer Intern Program is a nine or ten week long program, depending on the availability of Harvard housing. In 2009 the program will likely run from Sunday, June 7th through Saturday, August 15th.The program is funded by the National Science Foundation and the Smithsonian Institution. Undergraduate students interested in a career in astronomy, astrophysics, physics, or related physical sciences are encouraged to apply for the 2009 program. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents (Green Card holders), and must be enrolled in a degree program leading to a bachelors degree. Synopsis:

S&S considers proposals that examine questions that arise in the interactions of engineering, science, technology, and society. IAU Travel Grants - Exchange of Astronomer Grant Programme

Within the limitations imposed by the budget of the commission as approved by the executive committee of the International Astronomical Union, funds are available to Commission 46 toward grants to qualified individuals to enable them to visit institutions abroad. Organization of American States (OAS) - Graduate and Undergraduate Studies or Graduate Research

Synopsis:

OAS scholarships are awarded for full-time study, or research, leading to a graduate or undergraduate degree, in any OAS member state except the one sponsoring the candidate for the OAS scholarship. OAS scholarships are awarded for study or research only in institutions located in an OAS Member State. The OAS scholarship provides, depending on the circumstances of each scholar: a round-trip ticket, tuition and fees, a yearly book allowance, health insurance and a monthly subsistence allowance (which varies from country to country). No benefits are paid to family members of the OAS scholar.

Synopsis:

NSF aims to ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in the United States and to reinforce its diversity by offering approximately 1,654 graduate fellowships in this competition pending availability of funds. The Graduate Research Fellowship provides three years of support for graduate study leading to research-based master's or doctoral degrees and is intended for students who are in the early stages of their graduate study. The Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) invests in graduate education for a cadre of diverse individuals who demonstrate their potential to successfully complete graduate degree programs in disciplines relevant to the mission of the National Science Foundation.
