Welcome to the MICA Journal Club.
Taking advantange of the capabilities of Virtual Worlds environments we have the opportunity to create a unique Journal Club with attendees from many different institutions from all over the world including the authors of the papers being discussed.
We hope you will join us and we encourage you to invite other colleague astrophysicists and students you think might be interested.
When
Second and Fourth Friday of every month. 7:30 Second Life Time (=Pacific Time)-10:30 EST ``coffee time 8:00 Second Life Time (=Pacific Time)-11:00 EST Start of the discussion
Where
Second Life ISM Workshop room: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Spaceport%20Bravo/153/205/59
Format
- Discussion of a paper with one or more authors of the paper informally illustrating the main points of the paper and answering questions from attendees.
- Formal talk on the results of a paper by one of the authors followed by discussion and questions.
- Discussion of a paper with no author present. Authors might be invited to a later Journal Club event to answer questions raised during the discussion and for further discussion.
Topics
These will probably be determined by the interests and expertise of attendees.
At least initially we expect the Journal Club to be dominated by computational
astrophysics, dense stellar systems (MODEST)-like papers.
We strongly encourage attendees to come to the Journal Club with suggestions for future papers to be discussed.
Requirements
In general no one will be required to give a talk on a paper (unless someone volunteers to do that) not even the person who suggested the paper.
Only requirement.....really reading the papers!!
Intended Audience
Astrophysicists. While the journal club will be open to everyone, it will not be an outreach event and we expect the discussion to be technical.
