Sshfs

Say you're on one computer, and want to mount a directory from a remote host. There are several options, of which NFS may be the most commonly used. NFS, however, is not secure, and therefore only useful on internal networks (e.g. between Newton and the computer lab). If you're at home, with a dark and dangerous internet in between yourself and Newton, NFS is not a good idea. Luckily, some enterprising folks have written SSHFS, which lets you mount remote directories via the SSH protocol we all know and love. Now you can mount anything you have SSH access to securely from anywhere!

Mount with

sshfs remoteuser@remotehost:/path/to/remote_dir local_mountpoint

and unmount with

fusermount -u local_mountpoint

Note that you may need to install sshfs (on Debian-esque systems `apt-get install sshfs`), and that you probably need super-user status to go mounting and unmounting things on your local filesystem (try `sudo` before each of the above commands).
